The world of malware has coughed up a new and nasty threat to your valuable data: holding it hostage and ransoming it.

Don’t believe it? Meet Cryptolocker a member of the malware clan that ransoms your hard drive data.

This particular piece of malware preys on those of you who either aren’t running Virus & Malware protection, or you aren’t keeping it up to date. They target an unprotected machine and are able to place a small piece of code on your hard drive that will encrypt all your data. Then they ask for payment via an online payment system.

Our friends at Sophos have made a quick helpful video demonstration of just how this works. It’s 8 minutes well spent to see firsthand how devastating this little piece of malware can be.

So now’s the time to check those virus & malware systems to make sure that they are running as expected, and they are updating regularly even out to your mobile users.

If you have concerns about your virus protection, give us a call. We’ll be happy to help you patch your systems and get up to date so your data won’t ever have to worry about menaces like Cryptolocker.
